DRAWING AND PAINTING: I-II and III-IV
Class Description
The major emphasis of the course is to enable the student to develop skills in the areas of drawing and painting. This will involve experimenting with and developing the basic understanding of art fundamentals and knowledge of the subject utilizing different media and techniques.
Goals
Under the guidelines of the California State Standards for Visual Arts, students will:
• Demonstrate basic skill building in drawing and painting, applying the basic Art Elements and Principles of Design.
• Experience hands-on understanding of the development of art, artistic philosophy, art criticism and art history.
• Analyze and make critical assessments about art works.
• Create art that shows individual and expressive creativity and problem solving ability.
• Develop observational skills.
• Appreciate art and the making of art as a vital aspect of the educational and human experience.
• Gain a working knowledge of the artist studio, practicing the skills necessary to set up and maintain a community and personal workspace.
Assessment
Student’s final grade will be evaluated according to:
Portfolio – 50%
Class projects are based on the student’s
1) personal best effort 2) following of instructions 3) full use of class time
Sketchbook- 20%
Home assignments; notes; outside sketches; personal expression
Participation in Class- 20%
Critiques; respect for studio; cleaning and use of supplies; working well/interaction with peers
Tests/Notes- 10%
Art Elements/ Principles of Design; Color TheoryClass Projects will include:

Still life-pencil, colored pencil, markers, ink
Portraiture
Landscape
Figure Drawing
Illustration
Ink exploration
Scratch board
Watercolor
Acrylic Painting
Charcoal drawing
Pastels (oil and chalk)
