The name of the game is: Register for “Wind Ensemble”
Concert Band Groups (“Wind Ensemble”):
-All students will register for the ONE “Wind Ensemble” class. Auditions will be held during the first week of June, students will automatically be placed in their appropriate band class period (Wind Ensemble H, Symphonic Band or Concert Band).
Jazz Band A (zero period):
-No student will register for the zero period Jazz Band class (it will not be available in Naviance). Students will contact Mr. Borquez directly to arrange an audition time (zborquez@oakparkusd.org). Auditions will take place during the first week of June
-All students intending to audition for Jazz Band MUST* enroll in “Wind Ensemble.” Students selected for Jazz Band A will be automatically placed in the zero period class—this will replace any previously requested zero period course.
Advanced Band Fall: Marching Band (eighth period):
-For Marching Band/Drumline during the first semester, students will sign up for “Advanced Band: Fall (Marching Band).” Students must ALSO enroll in “Wind Ensemble.”
Advanced Band Spring: Drumline and Jazz Band B (eighth period):
-For Drumline and Jazz B during the second semester, students will sign up for “Advanced Band: Spring (Drumline/Jazz).” Students must ALSO* enroll in “Wind Ensemble.” Eighth Period Jazz is intended as an option for students who do not audition into the zero period Jazz Band A class.
*Concurrent enrollment in “Wind Ensemble” is not required for Jazz Guitar, Bass, and Piano players. All other instruments MUST enroll in, and maintain enrollment in, “Wind Ensemble” in order to audition for Jazz Band A zero period and/or participate in Jazz B eighth period.
Sample 4-year Course Outline for the UC/CSU College Bound Musician.
The easiest and best way to ensure room in your schedule each year is to TAKE A ZERO PERIOD CLASS. The sample 4-year course outline accounts for the taking of a zero period class throughout all four years, therefore giving you seven course options each year (specific zero period recommendations are not indicated since zero period offerings may change from year to year).

( ) = highly recommended to be taken during summer school
Other ways to make even more room in your schedule (especially for those hoping to be in Jazz Band A):
-Take summer school to satisfy local OPHS graduation requirements (health/9th P.E., technology, practical skills, etc.) and other UC/CSU pre-requisite courses. Visit http://www.friendsofoakparkschools.org/summer-school/ophs-summer-school-2015/#hs-class-offerings for the complete list of summer school offerings.
-Take Advanced Band (Marching Band) for at least two years to fulfill the 10th grade P.E. requirement.
We hear all the time about studies that prove that consistent participation in music ensemble classes, and the performance of music at a high level, directly correlate to a higher GPAs and standardized test scores (ie: SATs). That being said, Music students NEED to be GOOD OVERALL STUDENTS. The above Sample Outline does not account for needing to re-take a class—don’t limit your options!
