• Humanities consists of two subjects:  Social Studies and Language Arts.  In social studies we cover ancient human development to the Roman Empire.  Language Arts uses both short stories and novels during the year to develop the student's understanding and appreciation of literature as well as to teach key literary terms.  We also focus on writing and the skills necessary for writing, such as spelling, parts of speech, punctuation, paragraphing, and written dialogue.

The core literature books we read are The Giver and Ulysses.
Grammar is also taught from the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Language Book.  We will cover nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, subjects and predicates.
Accelerated Reader is a program to increase outside reading.  Students are required to chose and read one book per quarter from a list of over 3000.  Each book is listed by grade level and the teacher must approve each book .  When the book is completed, a multiple choice test will be taken in class that will account for approximately 10 % of the quarters over all grade.  A book list can be found at the following web site:  www.mcms.opusd.k12.ca.us
