Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    April's Pick:

    selection

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.   (Description from amazon.com   Go to this website to read the first chapter on line!)

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    September's Pick:

"Four" looks like a regular teenage guy, but he has always know that he was one of nine survivors of a distant planet.  The hopes of re-establishing his people's future rests on their shoulders.  But how can that save their people, when the nine are being executed.  It's happened to the first three... and now they are after him.

Will he survive?  Will he meet his task of saving his people, or will he, too, be destroyed and the task handed off to Number Five?

Lots of action adventure, which a good dose of suspense (and sprinkling of romance).  Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

    Summer's Pick:
    artemis

Here's a fun summer read.   Most books are about heroes:  those who want to save the world, save other people...

A computer genius, Artemis Fowl only wants to save himself.  Well, he would save the world.  But only so he could own it all.  He is already rich, but Artemis figures that he can be richer.

Who will stop this evil mastermind?  Is there anyone in the world who can stop him?  ...in the world?  Or... under it?

I LOVE this book and I love this series.  A good, fun way to kick off summer...

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    May's Pick:
    maya

OH MY GOSH!!!  THIS BOOK!!!  I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

I read this book over Spring Break.  It was so good I read it all the way through in one night.  How did I hear about this book?  Because John Green recommended it.  (Yes, THAT John Green!)   Here's the summary from amazon.com about this TRUE story that was just published this spring:

A breakout teen author explores the true meaning of popularity in a hysterically funny, touchingly honest contemporary memoir.

Can curlers, girdles, Vaseline, and a strand of pearls help a shy girl become popular?

Maya Van Wagenen is about to find out.

Stuck near the bottom of the social ladder at “pretty much the lowest level of people at school who aren’t paid to be here,” Maya has never been popular. But before starting eighth grade, she decides to begin a unique social experiment: spend the school year following a 1950s popularity guide, written by former teen model Betty Cornell.

The real-life results are hilarious, painful, and filled with unexpected surprises. Told with humor and grace, Maya’s journey offers readers of all ages a thoroughly contemporary example of kindness and self-confidence, along with a better understanding of what it means to be popular.

Mrs. Dusek again... EVERYONE should read this book.  It is THAT good!

(AR:  none yet, but that's OK b/c we're reading Anne Frank...)

    ranger 2

Now that we're all experts on life in the Middle Ages, let's see what happens when you add some action, adventure, and maybe... a monster or two?  Will No-Last-Name is a skinny, short orphan who is ready to become an apprentice.  But who will want to take him on, with little strength and lack of... well... anything really special about him?  Will he get the job of his dreams, learning to become a knight?  Or is there a more mysterious future awaiting him?

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    March's Pick:
    name

The Name of this Book is a Secret by Psydonymus Bosch

(Hey...What happened to February? Wasn't it just January?  Well, anyway...)

So, I normally would tell you what a book is about in this space, but I can't.  I mean, I really can't.  The information is in this book is so dangerous and secret, that you shouldn't even read it.  Really.  Don't.  You would need to be brave enough to read about evil masterminds, clever enough to follow the many codes, and quirky enough to appreciate the rather likeable, yet unusual heroes.  Whom I can't describe.  For their own safety.  And yours.  So whatever you do, don't read this book... or any of the others in this series.

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    January's Pick:
    12

Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey

A nonfiction book?  And a classic?!  Crazy, I know!!!

This is the TRUE story of a family in America at the turn of the 20th Century.  Yes, there are 12 kids in the family.  And Dad is an "efficiency expert" whose job it is to travel to factories and businesses to tell them how to organize themselves as quickly and easily as possible.  Guess which kids serve as the guinea pigs in this experiment?  And if that isn't enough to deal with, Mr. Gilbreth has to struggle against his four eldest daughters who do not want to hold to old-fashioned ideals, but are ready to cut their hair, raise their skirts and be "popular," like the "regular girls."  Humor and chaos abound!

P.S.  Nothing like the Steve Martin movie with the same name...

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    November's Pick:
    flipped
This is SUCH a cute story.

OK.  I say that a lot, but it's true.  In this book, the story is told from two points of view:  Juli & Bryce.  First one describes the story in a chapter, then the action FLIPS and the other person tells his/her point of view.  Get it?

Anyway, it's the story of two people who meet as little kids and how they interact as they grow older.  They are NOT best friends when they meet.  Will they change?  Will they ever become friends?

(Ha!  I just realized I chose a book for November that has a bird on the cover.  Am I thinking of turkeys already?)

Just for fun...  Books so good you won't want to put them down, even to answer your phone!

    October's Pick:
    lost hero

Once upon a time, there was boy named Percy Jackson who learned he was a demi-god and went on many adventures.

    This is not that story...

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jason.  Maybe?!  Well, there was a boy.  Who woke up with no memory of who he was, where he was, or how he had gotten there.

And then things got really weird...

(Awesome, magical adventures.  The first in the Lost Olympians series.  House of Hades comes out this month.  So excited!  Standing at the mailbox, waiting for my Amazon delivery!!!)

    ender

    Ender's Game
    by Orson Scott Card

Are you a Hunger Games fan?  How about The Maze Runner series?  Or Divergent?  This book, written many years before those series, is similar...

Set in the future, Earth has been under attack for many years by an alien race.  Facing possible extinction, the adults are willing to try almost anything to survive.  One plan... watch all the young children and look for ones to train as possible military leaders.

One kid chosen is "Ender."  (Don't worry... that's his nickname.)  Anyway, he's chosen, pulled from his family, and sent to a special military school.  How will Ender adjust?  Will he prove the be the savior of the human race that everyone hopes he will be?  Or will he crack under the pressure?

An excellent story with similar themes to The Hunger Games series... individual vs. society; freedom vs. control; violence vs. friendship...  If the survival of the entire human race rested on your shoulders, which would you choose?

(AR value:  16 points... as if you care, b/c it's almost SUMMER!!)
