  • Oak Park Schools Move Toward ZERO WASTE

A new recycling and food waste composting program is being rolled out in all schools this fall after a successful pilot at Medea Creek Middle School last school year. When a student is finished with lunch virtually everything left can be recycled. This includes FOOD WASTE of all types. This project has been led by the Environmental Education and Awareness Committee. As a National Green Ribbon School District, OPUSD desires to teach and model sound environmental practices.

  • New Oak Park High School Green Classrooms

Seven new classrooms constructed from recycled sea containers are the first in the nation to be installed in a public school. These new classrooms are 'Net Zero' buildings meaning they will use less energy than they produce. This is due to the hyper-efficiency of the buildings with LED lighting and super efficient air conditioning and heating systems, cool roofs, thick insulation, and solar panels. The landscape in front of the buildings is drought-tolerant and absorbs storm water runoff in bioswales.

  • All 3 Oak Park USD Elementary Schools 'Distinguished'

The California Department of Education has named all three Oak Park elementary schools as 2014 California Distinguished Schools. The application process is arduous and each of the schools received a full day site validation visit from officials. This award is the 5th for Brookside, 4th for Oak Hills, and 3rd for Red Oak (our newest elementary school). 424 schools earned this honor this year out of 5768 public elementary schools in California.
