    OAK HILLS ELEMENTARY

    April 6, 2014

    Dance - A - Thon!!    April 17th

Just what is the Oak Hills Dance-a-thon?   Should your child carbo-load or take dance lessons beforehand to prepare?  Although I am an advocate of dance lessons (great cardio!) they are not necessary for the dance-a-thon.  Basically students try to get as many sponsor donations as they can for their one hour of dancing at the Dance-a-thon.  There will be teachers (Mr. K!), presidents (Irene!) and a funky D.J. to motivate the kids into really getting down!

For a complete list of prizes, go to: Dance A Thon Prizes

An easy way to get sponsors from friends and family that are not local is to have them register on line through this link:

     www.oakparkusd.org/Page/7199

Also, students can manually fill out a sponsor sheet:

    Dance A Thon Sponsor Sheet

Break a sponsorship record, break a sweat and break-dance!
This message was brought to you by your excited Oak Hills Dance-A-Thon committee!

Hope to see you on the Black Top April 17th!

Are you friendly, outgoing and love chatting on the phone?  Do friends tell you how persuasive you are?

    Yes?!

Then the Oak Hills Elementary advertising team may be the job for you!  Be a part of the group or take the reigns of this exciting low maintenance committee!

This job starts out at an easy, breezy pace in May and June.  It entails sending emails, making phone calls and in-person visits are always a plus.

And never fear...you are not alone!  The board is happy to set the price points, go over strategies and get some folks to help you out.

    How about it?

The bulk of the job concludes in October/November once the directory and newsletter ads are set.  However, there may be opportunities for advertisers throughout the year and you and your team will be enlisted to lend a hand.

This committee is a GREAT way to make a difference in your child's school in a fun, low-pressure environment.

    Earth Week At Oak Hills

Earth Week is Coming to Oak Hills Elementary!

The Environmental Education and Awareness Committee's (EEAC) focus for the next few years revolves around the concept of "MAKING PEACE WITH THE NATURAL WORLD." As a civilization and a species, we are at a critical juncture where if action is not taken on a variety of fronts we will see more extinctions, runaway climate change, further deterioration of our seas, and extreme food and water scarcity issues.

Our focus for this year is "Peace begins on our Plates." We have our school gardens up and running and for Earth Week, we will educate about food and nutrition in a new way. We believe that all children should understand the story of their food: where it comes from, how it was produced, what it means for personal and public health, and how our food choices affect the environment. Equipping children with food and nutrition education will empower them with lifelong skills.   Research on food education has shown that:

Knowledge about food and nutrition increases children's fruit and vegetable consumption.

Cooking and preparing fresh foods enhances children's appreciation for healthier and diverse foods

Planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables motivates children to also eat them.

Earth Week activities planned for our students and parents:

In-classroom Smart Board lessons about food and food choices and fun iPad games in the Tech Lab

Grown Your Own: Plant some tomato seeds in a compostable container during lunch and take it home!

Help Central American families learn sustainable farming techniques so they can              provide for themselves and restore the tropical forests by bringing in loose change            (the class that raises the most money will go on a field trip to see the new IMAX 3D            movie "Island of Lemurs: Madagascar") - more details below Explore new library                books about food and sustainable farming

Drop off used clothing in our USAgain recycling bins (remember, no textiles should go to the landfill!) - we get double the price for the month of April.                                                         click here for more information on USAgain

Donate used ink cartridges and small electronics to our Green Hippo bin inside the office.            click here for more information on Green Hippo

    MORE RESOURCES

After learning about FOOD and NUTRITION in school, your kids may come home and challenge your family to pay more attention to what you're eating, so we've created a web resources page http://www.oakparkusd.org/earthweek that students and parents can go to for more information.

The PTA is proud to announce a new committee has been approved for the 2014/2015 school year. Dance A Thon - April 17th

Some folks like to dance a jig, a hula, or a tango.  At Oak Hills, we do the best dance there is!  We dance a THON!"  The Thon is a groovy, cool dance that's not only fun, it actually pays!!

Tell family, friends and neighbors that your child is dancing a Thon.  They will beg you to let them sponsor your child so that they may also be a part of this sassy dance craze that's sweeping across the black tops of the nation!

Please forward this link to friends and family so they can easily and conveniently

sponsor your child by APRIL17th: www.oakparkusd.org/Page/7199

Not only does sponsorship money benefit your child through all the life-enhancing

specials the Oak Hills PTA organizes, but the more they personally raise, the more they benefit directly by earning awesome prizes!!  For a list of all the great prizes, please go to:

    New PTA Committee - DIVERSITY

The PTA is proud to announce a new committee has been approved for the 2014/2015 school year. It is a diversity committee committed to finding new and exciting ways to celebrate all the diversity we have here at Oak Hills.  This committee will not be limited to differences in cultures but differences in learning styles, physical challenges and each child's unique perspective on the world.  Elementary school is the perfect time to plant the seeds of tolerance and acceptance for a generation that will be more global than local.

Our fantastic chair for this committee will be Nithya Muthuswamy.  Nithya brought this idea to the board a few months ago and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her join our team.

If you are interested in joining this very exciting new Oak Hills Elementary committee, please email Nithya at: mugenika@yahoo.com

    A Message From Our Principal

    Dear Oak Hills Families -

I am happy to report that Oak Hills has been invited this year to apply for California Distinguished School recognition.  Completing the extensive application provided our faculty and staff with a valuable opportunity to reflect on our school.  We identified two signature practices in the application process: Differentiated Instruction and Technology Integration.  In addition, we applied for special recognition in the area of Physical Activity and Nutrition.  We recently received word that our application has been accepted and we have been selected for a verification visit that will take place on Thursday, March 20th.

Our practice of differentiated instruction has become much more than adding occasional enrichment activities for high achieving students, referring struggling students to our intervention programs, while leaving the bulk of instructional program unchanged.  We certainly recognized the value of enrichment and intervention programs but these alone are not sufficient.  Our fundamental belief is that each student has unique needs and talents.  The practice of differentiated instruction at Oak Hills has required that teachers approach the craft of teaching in a new way.  The strategies implemented include the use of formative assessment, flexible grouping, allowing student choice, teaching independence, structuring class to allow 1:1 and small group instruction, and designing inquiry-based and open-ended learning opportunities.  Through differentiation, we endeavor to make every learning experience engaging, accessible, and rigorous.

    Thank you !!!

    Thank you, Oak Hills Parents!

On behalf of the entire Spring Gala committee, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents that attended last nights- An Evening On The Lake- at Zin Bistro to help support all the important programs here at Oak Hills Elementary. It was a memorable evening that most us of won't soon forget.  We not only raised (and FAR exceeded) our monetary goals for the evening, we also had an evening filled with camaraderie, breathtaking views and laughter.

Oak Hills Elementary is a magical place.  I see it every day when I walk on the campus, and I felt it last night when I had the honor of spending the evening with so many of you.

I will keep you posted on just how well we did last night.  For now, I would just like to bask in the glow of an evening that not only raised some much-needed money for our school, but raised our spirits, as well.

Thank you, from the bottom of my PTA heart, for making last night a success beyond anything any of us could have imagined.  I wake up every day with the objective of doing my very best for your children and this school.  As I looked around last night I knew, that for a couple magical hours at least, I had achieved my goal.

    Oak Hills Love,

    Irene Lyle

Have you Heard of Wash Bucks?

"Wash bucks" is a great way to support Oak Hills! If you are not aware, there is a gas station/ car wash facility on the corner of Reyes Adobe Rd. and Canwood Place, in Agoura Hills.  It is the "76" gas station.  For every $10 that we spend on anything in their facility (excluding gas), they will give us a coupon worth $1.  You have to ask them for the coupon.  Then, you can bring the coupon to school and leave it in your child's classroom (along with box tops), or you can bring it in to the office and leave it in the container marked "Box tops/ Wash Bucks".  The container is located near the side door that leads out to the kindergarten classes.  Each year, we raise several hundred dollars for Oak Hills through this program!

    Please e-mail Beth Meyer at
felsen7@juno.com with any questions you have about this program.
