    OAK HILLS ELEMENTARY

    December 3, 2014

Thank You Invest In Your Child Donors

Thank you Invest in Your Child Donors

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the 225 families who have already donated to our annual "Invest in Your Child" Fundraiser (Please click here to see the list). We are very fortunate to be a part of such a giving community and have raised an amazing $55,785 so far (not including matching), and donations continue to come in.

This year, because of the generous support of our Oak Hills parents, the PTA is able to support the Music and Art programs, Computer instruction, special assemblies such as the Music Van, and many other events and programs that help provide a well-rounded educational experience for Oak Hills students.

For those that donated a lump sum, we are in the process of sending out the tax-deductible receipts via email, and you should receive yours within the next week or so.  For those making installment payments, your receipt will be emailed to you at the end of the installment period.

By the way, it's never too late to donate or apply for a matching corporate donation!  If you or your spouse works for a company such as Amgen, Bank Of America, Northrop Grumman, Dole, Wells Fargo, Universal, or Verizon, then your company will match your donation.  It's simple to do and we are here to help if you need assistance.

We would love each Oak Hills family to consider making a donation.  It is not mandatory, but it is the most effective and efficient way the PTA can continue to provide the needed support to our school.  We welcome all donations at any time of the year, as we never say NO to supporting our school, children and teachers.  Checks should be made payable to "Oak Hills PTA".

    Yours gratefully,

    Irene Lyle, PTA President

    November 30, 2014

    From The Office

    A Family With-in Our Family...

As the year draws to a close, the office staff at Oak Hills looks back upon all of the many blessings in our lives with a sense of fulfillment.  We count you as one of those blessings and we would like to take a moment to thank you all for your love and support this past year.

There is already so much good in our lives that we want to pass a little bit of what we have on to someone who might be in need.  We have found that a family within our Oak Hills Family could use a hand.

With that in mind, we would like to respectfully request that in lieu of any holiday or year-end gift you might have given to us, that you instead make a donation to our "Family With-in Our Family" fund.

Checks should be made out to Oak Hills Staff Association and can be placed in the box in the office.  Gift cards to grocery stores are also welcome.  If you have any questions, please ask anyone in the office.

Donations will be accepted through December 17, 2014.

    Fondly,

    Bonnie, Linda, Maureen and Meredith

Please note that this is the preference of the office staff only and

should not influence any gifts you might make to teaching staff.

Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, and then present their solution in a competition format with other teams in the same problem and division. Here is some of the basic information about the program:

    • Students work in teams of up to seven members under the guidance of an adult coach.
    • Coaches will be parent volunteers who will be trained by Debbie Hammill, our district K-12 Science Specialist.
    • Teams spend weeks or months, at their own pace, creating solutions to long-term problems.
    • Team members come up with all the ideas for their solution and do all the work themselves.
    • Coaches may help teach skills and educate the team on ways of approaching the problem and of evaluating their solution.
    • Teams must work within the cost limit stated in the problem.
    • Teams have 8 minutes to present their long-term problem solution in competition.
    • Teams are scored for meeting the requirements of the problem and for creativity in categories specific to each problem.
    • At the competition teams are also presented a spontaneous problem to solve on site.
    • A team's standing in competition is determined by its combined Long-Term score, Style score, and Spontaneous score.

For more information, I encourage you to contact Mrs. Hammill directly.  (Many of our fifth grade parents will remember Debbie since she led us on our recent trip to Santa Cruz Island.)  She can be reached at Dhammill@oakparusd.org.  You can also find more information on her Science Enrichment website at: http://www.oakparkusd.org/domain/23

    Important Information From The Office

There is a new VISITOR BADGE system in place at each school.  When you come on campus to visit your child's classroom, volunteer, or conduct business in a place other than the school office you are required to obtain a temporary visitor badge.  To get a badge you will scan your driver's license and print a badge in the office reception area.  The badge will be dated and good for that day only.  VISITORS ON CAMPUS WITHOUT A BADGE WILL BE DIRECTED TO THE OFFICE TO GET ONE.  Please do not be upset with campus supervisors, teachers, or administrators if they ask you to get a badge.  This is required 100% of the time for all visitors.  Employees have permanent badges they are required to wear.  Driver's license information will be securely maintained for a temporary period of time and then deleted.  If you object to scanning your diver's license then you will not be allowed to visit campus.  The school district takes the safety and security of the students very seriously and has a responsibility to know who is visiting the campus during the school day.  The badge system has been designed to be simple and quick.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation.

    Oak Hills Run Club

We are excited to announce the launch of the Oak Hills Run Club for students.  Multiple studies have shown that cardio exercise in the morning promotes better mood, concentration, and academic performance.  Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey, author of the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, states, "even 10 minutes of exercise changes your brain."

Starting September 24th, we will meet every Wednesday and Friday morning in the PE field from 7:45-8:15am.  Your child may attend one day or both days. All students are welcome.  When the bell rings, students will be sent to class.   All students that participate will be eligible for prizes (and bragging rights)!  Come join the fun and work your body and brain!   It's free, but please complete sign-up forms which will be sent home or click below for the forms.

    OAK HILLS ELEMENTARY

    August 19, 2014

    Welcome Back, Oak Hills Families!

It's that time of year again when we all take the last breaths of summer into our lungs and then exhale...readying ourselves for the new school year ahead.

Personally, I always find the best cure for the end of summer blues is to be at registration! The streams of paperwork, the barrage of information and, of course, the inevitable class placement followed by your child's declaration of trepidation and angst. Who needs flip flops and s'mores when you can have all that?! Sign me up!

    One last thing...

Thank you once again for your continued cooperation and understanding through this registration period. Many dedicated, amazing PTA members have worked non-stop over the summer, volunteering their personal time, to ensure a smoothe, more efficiently run, registration event and school year for everyone at Oak Hills. I assure you this is not the norm at other schools. I ask for your patience and consideration when the unavoidable hiccup, misstep or long line occurs.

    Thank you!

    A Message From Our Principal

Happy Final Weeks of Summer! -

It is hard to believe that our summer break is drawing to a close.  I hope that you and your children have had a great summer with plenty of time to get out and play.  Our staff has been out playing too, but we are now busy getting ready for another great school year!

    CAMPUS PREPARATIONS:

Our amazing lead custodian, Mr. Brian, our afternoon custodian, Mr. Arturo, and our small but mighty maintenance crew have been hard a work this summer.  The campus is almost ready for opening day.  We are installing a new playground area for the Preschool and our new Discovery Kindergarten program.  A new fence will be installed in the next few days separating this area from the soccer field, and additional work will be phased in as time and funds allow.  All new network cabling will be up and running by the beginning of school.  We are on schedule to switch over to the new wireless system the day before school starts.  We have installed 120 security cameras across the district and several are on our campus.  These will protect our property from vandalism while we are not here, and provide increased safety in the event of an emergency.  We will also have a new phone system that will be much more user friendly and reliable.  We expect this to be up and running early in the school year.

    STAFFING:

This year we will welcome four new members to our teaching team.  You have already heard about our new Discovery Kindergarten program, and this class will be taught by Barbara McPhillips.  Barbara comes to us from Red Oak Elementary, and has experience teaching K and DK, as well as working in our preschool. Over the summer she has been busy completely renovating and outfitting Room 24 for this new class, and it is going to be a beautiful space for this exciting program.

We are also excited to welcome Katelyn Loe to our fifth grade team.  Ms. Loe taught fifth grade at Sycamore Elementary, in neighboring CVUSD, and comes highly recommended by her colleagues.  When I spoke with her previous principal, he described her as one of the best he's ever seen.  During her demonstration lesson, we were particularly impressed with her ability to inspire critical thinking and differentiate instruction, and most of all her ability to connect with her students.  With these skills and attributes, Ms. Loe will fit right in with our amazing fifth grade team.

We are excited to welcome Amanda Berg to our third grade team this year.  Ms. Berg received her Bachelor's degree and teaching credentials at California Lutheran University.  During her graduate studies she taught in Moorpark Unified School District.  Upon completing her credential, Ms. Berg decided to go teach in Kampala, Uganda, where she worked with children who had been abandoned and lived on the streets.  She taught children of various ages at a primary school.  After completing her time of service in Uganda, she returned to Ventura County and worked at Somis School as their reading specialist.  Her previous superintendent noted that her students were "highly engaged and active participants in their learning".

We are excited to welcome Kristin Chobanian back to her Oak Hills roots.  She will be joining our 4th grade team and is no stranger to our 4th grade pod.  This is where her teaching career began 20 years ago when she student taught 4th grade. Mrs. Chobanian says she knew right then and there that she was meant to teach and loved the 4th grade curriculum.  For the next seven years, she taught 1st and 4th grade at Red Oak Elementary, where she earned our District's Apple Award recognition in 1999-2000.  After taking time off to start her family, Mrs. Chobanian worked as Reading Specialist in the Conejo Valley School District where she enjoyed the challenge of helping students develop their reading skills, and also returned to Oak Park to teach art at Brookside Elementary.  Her husband also began his teaching career at Oak Hills and taught 5th grade with Ms. Melville for three years.  He now teaches film and broadcast journalism Oaks Christian School.  They have three children; 7, 9 and 11 years old and a puppy named Dodger (...and yes, they are BIG fans).

Finally, I want to thank Mrs. Follendrof, Ms. Melville, Mrs. Reints, Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Mendivil and Mrs. Novak for all the time and effort they contributed to help us find the best of the best.  Finding the right people to join our school team is one of the most critical things we do.  Please join me in welcoming these outstanding educators to our Oak Hills Family.

    REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION:

Monday evening, August 18th, we will hold our Ice Cream Social to welcome new families.  This informal get together is an important opportunity to help new students and their families get to know each other and connect with some of our existing families.  Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd, will be student registration.  Returning students will come in on Thursday and new students will attend on Friday.  Be sure to follow the instructions on our website:
    http://www.oakparkusd.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=7303

On Friday, we will also give our new students an orientation and tour, led by a group of our Student Ambassadors.  In addition to learning their way around the campus, these new students will meet some familiar faces who will help them feel comfortable during the potentially difficult first few days in their new school.  On Tuesday, August 26th at 2:00 p.m., we will have an orientation just for Kindergarten and Discovery Kindergarten students and their families.

If you are on the campus during the opening days of school and see an unfamiliar face, please provide a friendly 'hello' and a smile.  Your children often follow your lead and it is important as parents to show our new families that we welcome them to their new Oak Hills Family.  We want Oak Hills to be a place where families feel connected and where all children can thrive.

That is all for now.  As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  See you soon!

    Mr. Warren
