• “CALIFORNIA THURSDAYS” COMES TO OAK PARK CAFETERIAS

April 14, 2015 - OPUSD has joined with the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, CA to become part of the California Thursdays initiative, which includes a network of 42 California school districts committed to preparing scratch-cooked meals using ingredients sourced from farmers and producers right here in the Golden State.

For our kick-off lunchtime barbecue event on April 23rd, we will be offering a choice of two meals for $5 each: Grilled Chicken Tacos or Teriyaki Grilled Veggie Kabobs. The recipe for the Grilled Chicken Taco meal is provided by Guillermina Perez, an Oak Park parent, district employee, and phenomenal cook. The recipe for our Teriyaki Grilled Veggie Kabob meal comes to us from JOi Café, a popular plant-based restaurant in Westlake Village.

We are sourcing free-range, hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken, grown and raised by Lillian Z Ranch<http://zackybeta.wrlhost.com/lillian-z-ranch-chicken/> in Petaluma, CA; tortillas made from organically-grown California corn by Mi Rancho<http://www.mirancho.com/our-story/>, a family-owned operation in Oakland, CA; non-GMO California brown rice from Lundberg Family Farms<http://www.lundberg.com/about/> based in Richvale, CA; and fruits and vegetables from local producers, including McGrath Family Farm<http://www.mcgrathfamilyfarm.com/> in Camarillo, CA. The tofu included in our kabobs is made from organic soybeans and hand-crafted by Hodo Soy Beanery<http://hodosoy.com/about/mission-history/> in Oakland, CA.
