• K5Writing

       

    The K-5 writing benchmarks are designed for teachers to bring clarity, uniformity and accuracy to grading student writing.Student samples are included to reflect the core writing standards which must be met in order for a student to score a “4” at each semester.

     

    Although each sample is rated “4”, it should be noted that none of the examples is perfect.  Rather, each sample simply demonstrates the qualities of writing that the committee felt should be mastered by the end of each trimester.    The benchmarks are based on core standards,which are broken down sequentially throughout the school year.  A student is not expected to gain mastery of a concept that has not yet been taught, but deserves to be rewarded for mastering the concepts that have. Therefore, it is possible for a student to score a “4” in the first trimester but a “3” the next if mastery of the subsequent benchmarks has not been attained.  In other words, the progression of skills should not necessarily begin at “2” and progress to “3”and “4” as the year unfolds.
