This is a story about color television!
Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1917 and died in 1965. One
of his many contributions to science and engineering was introducing color television to Mexico
in 1940 and, of course, the world—though it was not widely used until the 1960s. Mexico was
the first country to enjoy color television. More recently, González Camarena color was used for
outer space. During the Voyager 1 mission in 1979, to photograph the planet Jupiter, NASA used
the Bicolor System, which was simpler electronic means for a mission at such long distance. The
first Jupiter colors we then owe to González Camarena. Gonzalez Camarena was a man of great
curiosity, interested in a wide variety of science and engineering projects.
The next spirit event, the Great Bubble Gum Hunt, is this Friday at lunch. Contestants will

    is a preview…

This week’s World Impact Wednesday features Jackie Robinson.
Jackie Robinson was a second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was born in Georgia in
1919 and is best known for “breaking the color barrier” in major league baseball, as he was the
first African American in the 20 th century to play in the major leagues. Inducted into the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, he is equally remembered for his active involvement in the Civil
Rights Movement. While training in the army, he refused to move to the back of a segregated
bus and was arrested and court martialed. He eventually was cleared of the charges and was
given an honorable discharge. Every year on April 15 th every major league baseball team
celebrates “Jackie Robinson Day” in honor and remembrance of him breaking the color barrier.
A further honor is that his number is retired. Jackie Robinson died in 1972.

World Impact Wednesday #3; Greta Thunberg
This September, 16 year old environmental Swedish activist Greta Thunberg sailed from the
United Kingdom on a solar powered boat to New York City, with the purpose of addressing the
United Nations in regards to the climate crisis, and keeping a promise she made to herself “to do
everything she could to make a difference”.
Greta Thunberg first made a public appearance when she was 15 years old, where she protested
climate change outside of the Swedish Parliament and demanded that the necessary steps and

actions were taken by governments to care for our home, Earth. When Greta began to protest,
she did this bravely and alone. This became an inspiration to other students around the world.
From Greta’s small journey outside of Parliament, she sparked a widespread community of
students around the world and inspired them to make a difference, to pressure adults to take
environmental action. Greta has become famous around the world for inspiring students to speak
up for Mother Earth, as she feels politicians are not doing their job to protect the environment
    and Earth’s future.
Greta talks passionately about the world’s climate crisis and she shares her personal challenges
with Asperbergers and OCD. She says she uses what is challenging and what makes her
different as her “superpower.” Greta’s important lesson for young people everywhere is, if there
is something you believe in and you want to make a positive difference, or change the world for
the better, you are never too young to do so!

Medea’s Morning Announcements are beginning a new feature: World Impact Wednesdays.
Each Wednesday we will be sharing a well known person’s “claim to fame”, how and why
he/she made a positive impact on the world. We welcome you submitting ideas and information
about people from your native country or heritage who have made an important, positive
contribution to the world. Today’s person is Frida Kahlo.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 and died in 1954. As a world famous
painter, she is remembered for her self-portraits and using bold, vibrant colors. She is
celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture.
Kahlo, who suffered from polio as a child, nearly died in a bus accident as a teenager.
She suffered multiple fractures of her spine, collarbone and ribs, a shattered pelvis,

broken foot and dislocated shoulder. She began to focus heavily on painting while
recovering in a body cast. In her lifetime, she had 30 operations. Creating art helped her
    to cope.
During her life Kahlo created approximately 200 paintings, sketches and drawings. She
was married to fellow artist Diego Rivera, perhaps Mexico’s most famous painter.
Kahlo’s bright blue house in Mexico City is now a museum and one of the most visited
sites in the city to this day.
And for a piece of MCMS trivia: Ms. Cadle has dressed up as Frida Kahlo for Halloween!

Each Wednesday we will be sharing a well known person’s “claim to fame”, how and why
he/she made a positive impact on the world. We welcome you to submit ideas and information
about people from your native country or heritage who have made an important, positive
contribution to the world. We will give more information on that later. For now, let me
    introduce you to Gustavo Dudamel:
Gustavo Dudamel, born in Venezuela, is the Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic. Each year you can see him conducting at Disney Concert Hall downtown, or at

the Hollywood Bowl during the summer. He credits the outstanding music education he enjoyed
in Venezuela with his success. He was a gifted music student, reading music scores at age 10,
an assistant conductor of his youth orchestra at 12 and by age 15 he was conducting.
The classical musical word took note of his rare abilities, and he studied and performed around
the world. In 2009 he came to Los Angeles to lead the Philharmonic as one of the youngest
conductors ever: 28 years old! In addition to classical music, he enjoys exposing our city to the
variety of Latin American music, “music of the Americas!” He is, perhaps, the most respected
and loved conductor of his generation. He believes that the arts are essential to young people’s
lives and that the power of music can heal, unite and inspire and change the world. For these
reasons we bring to you Gustavo Dudamel as our first “World Impact Wednesday” person.
