    CLASS INFORMATION AND POLICIES

    DEAR PARENTS AND STUDENTS:
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Oak Park High School. It is a pleasure to work with your student. Communication is essential to understanding and fulfilling the needs of each student. I believe we can all have a successful school year when we work together to achieve the goals we have set out for our students. My goal is to create a learning environment appropriate to each student’s needs, measure steps of achievement systematically and on a continual basis, while providing a safe, nurturing environment. Your patience during the first few weeks of school will help while I learn more about your student.

    OVERVIEW

The "Directed Studies" class (SAI Directed Studies on page 1 of the IEP) provides individualized and small group instruction for students who would benefit from instruction in methods and techniques of study, the successful completion of IEP goals and mastering California Standards. Lessons are designed to include assignments appropriate to the Individual Educational Plan specifications. Every student shall have an opportunity to learn in the classroom. In order to provide a proper learning environment, it is necessary for all students to cooperate and let others learn as well. The focus of this class will be to assist students in the further understanding of assignments from other classes, help students to complete tests based on IEP specifications, as well as time management, organization, and focus techniques. However, the "highly qualified" teacher of record is the only teacher who can provide the initial instruction of the subject matter. When a student is absent, it is essential that the student meet with the classroom teacher, attend 7th period support, and seek out that teacher for help. I will assist in directing the student to follow this method.

    BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
It is my goal to provide an environment in which all students can learn to the best of their abilities. Teaching methods, structure,  and a variety of learning strategies used in the classroom are designed to meet the needs of each student based on IEP goals and should not be taken lightly. They are carefully analyzed with many hours put into the preparation of lessons, extra hours of help for the student are provided, and a vast amount of communication is carried out between the home and school.
Teasing, bullying, cheating, touching others or any verbal or physical violence will not be tolerated. Please refer to the Student Handbook section on Discipline in the Time Tracker for school and district polices. All school policies will be adhered to in my classroom. The student will be given two warnings. The third occurrence of inappropriate behavior will be cause for a written referral to the administration and a required conference with the parents. A behavior contract will be constructed at that point. The student will be given a reasonable amount of time to show improvement. Students, who are unable to conform to the rules of the classroom may require further action.
Inappropriate dress is considered a distraction to the classroom environment. Please refer to the Oak Park High School policy regarding dress.  Any student who is inappropriately dressed in my classroom will be sent to the administration office and required to provide appropriate clothing before the student will be allowed to return to the classroom.
Cell phones must be turned off at all times in my classroom. Any phone that rings or is being used for text messaging during class will be turned over to the school administration. We use Chromebooks to access curriculum in the classroom. However, at times we do use cell phones to access curriculum and calendars. This is overseen by me.

     SUPPORT TIME
Each student has the opportunity for academic support. Oak Park High School has established a support structure through "Period 7." This period is an important part of a student's academic day, as it provides additional class time in a subject area, additional time for study, an opportunity to complete assignments, as well as time for test taking.
Case managed students should report to me at the beginning of 7th period support for consultation, direction, or remediation the first week of the school year and thereafter, at least one time per week. Students will be directed at that time to seek out their general education teachers appropriate to their needs. Students are required to attend 7th period support in my classroom the day of a test to finish it if not completed in the regularly scheduled class time (per IEP.) Students who have established a plan of 7th period support ahead of time would report directly to that teacher.
Students are encouraged to use a Time Tracker scheduler of assignments and have it initialed by the classroom teacher to confirm attendance. Each teacher has a sign in sheet for 7th period. Students must sign in and be counted.

    HOMEWORK

    • The expectation for students in grades 9-12 is two hours of homework per night. This Study Skills class will support your student's ability to meet the requirements of regular classes. To support your student at home, it is important to check the time tracker, each class syllabus, and teacher website daily to determine what must be completed.
    • Check Q weekly for missing work and email the classroom teachers to see if work is missing or not graded. It is unlikely that a student will pass a class if homework and classwork are not completed. When a class is failed, a student is off-track to graduate with classmates.
    • Appropriate study skills are essential to success at school and at home. Please provide the student with a quiet, well lit study area at home. Limits on TV, computer, and telephone time, will make a difference in your student’s school performance. I would be happy to consult with parents on ways to provide appropriate study environments.
    • If your student is having difficulty with an assignment or the parent needs clarification with an assignment, it is important to make contact with the classroom teacher as soon as possible by email. Please copy me on emails to teachers so that I may follow up with the student and teacher to meet the needs addressed in the IEP.

    GRADING

    COMMUNICATION

    • The best way to reach me is to send an e-mail to doswaks@opusd.org.  My classroom phone number is 818-735-3318. Please leave a message there if you are unable to reach me.  Please call me in an emergency situation. An emergency would involve medication issues, behavior issues, or accidents. I believe continual communication between home and school is beneficial to student success. If you know ahead of time that your student will be out of town or away from class for an extended period, please let me know one week ahead so I can prepare work for your student’s absence.
    • IEP meetings are held during the school day most often between 2:30-3:30 PM. Please be prepared to make arrangements in order to attend. Save the date/week information was sent in a Newletter at the end of July 2019. Notification of meetings will be sent by email attachment in a timely manner. Your timely response is imperative in order to maintain IEP consistency. Progress towards IEP goals will be mailed to the address(s) shown on page 1 of the IEP according to dates listed on the goal pages. If that address is incorrect, please update your address with the school office and me.
    • I require an email address and contact phone number for every parent and every student. If you are unable to provide that information, please contact me as soon as possible. Any changes to emergency contacts, addresses, phone numbers, emails, need to be communicated to me as soon as possible. Parents: please check your email daily!
    • Parents and students should refer to the Oak Park High School website for important information and class assignments.
