Visual and Performing Arts

One year (10 credits): The high school requirement may be met through any combination of 10 credit courses listed in our Visual and Performing Arts Department.  For students attending colleges in the UC/CSU system, the requirement is a year-long class in a single emphasis area (e.g., visual arts, instrumental music, drama, choral music).Also required for UC/CSU admission.

(AP) MUSIC THEORY

The Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course enables highly motivated students to engage in college level work in the areas of reading and analyzing notated music and aural training. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developing listening skills, sight singing ability, and knowledge of rhythm, melody, harmony, and other compositional devices. The successful student will be endowed with the skills necessary to function intelligently in any musical situation. The work of the course will emphasize preparation for the advanced placement music theory examination. Additionally, these listening, sight-singing, reading and writing skills will prepare them to participate in advanced music theory and ear-training classes and performing ensembles at the colleges/university of their choice.

AP STUDIO ART: 2-D DESIGN

(aka Computer Graphics AP)

PREREQUISITE-B or higher in Computer Graphics I/II          
UC/CSU-Subject f or g-Honors

This class offers the very serious and experienced art student an opportunity to work on a portfolio based on the Art AP guidelines.  Students produce between 25-30 individual pieces of artwork and submit their portfolio for AP credit.  Student must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Summer work is required and to be completed at the beginning of the semester. Students are expected to be proficient in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

ADVANCED 3-D DESIGN
(aka Advanced Ceramics)

Year Course

Grade 9-12

HS-Visual and Performing Arts or General Elective

Prerequisite-“C” or better in Ceramics and teacher approval.

This is an advanced level class for those wishing to explore higher levels of clay mastery as well as sculpture and studio process.   Applying 3D design principles to new technical challenges will be the focus.  Personal expression will be fundamental in this course

This course is the beginning of the AP program for those who intend to go on to that level. 

AP STUDIO ART-3-D DESIGN  
(aka Ceramics AP)

Prerequisite-“C” or better in Advanced Ceramics

UC/CSU-Subject f or g-Honors

This course is a college level art class that begins in the advanced level of 3D-Ceramics.  Students will be required to complete a portfolio of work with the goal to submit to the College Board for college credit.  It is a very intense performance class with the requirements of creating 21-24 works of art that show a clear focus and mastery by the student. 

AP STUDIO ART:
DRAWING/PAINTING

ACTING (CP)

For this version of Theater A: Acting, students must audition, and be cast in a production. They will earn (2.5 credits per production). This course offers workshops on acting techniques and history of the theater. Students work with professional performers throughout the year and develop beginning skills in acting.  Additionally, they explore the historical development of theater.  Students perform a number of roles in class plays and videos.

ACTING (CP)

ADVANCED CHOIR:
CHAMBER CHOIR (CP

Year Course

Grade 10-12

PREREQUISITE-1 year of choir or pass auditions within the first two weeks of class

This class is for students who have an understanding of at least level two of music theory. Students must be able to read music. They should also be able to site read at a high level and have a keen sense of pitch, intonation, and rhythm. Choral and solo competition will be encouraged at this level, along with Honor Choir Competition. There will be a significant amount of outside performances. Students will be exposed to an advanced repertoire. This class is basically for junior and senior students. Freshman and sophomores are accepted only at the director’s recommendation. All students placed in this class will audition at the end of the previous school year and within the first two weeks of class.  Underclassmen placed in this class are only allowed into the class at the director’s discretion. Students who audition for Chamber Choir MUST have previously been enrolled in VOCAL ENSEMBLE at least 1-2 years or otherwise at the director’s discretion.  

ADVANCED COMPUTER ANIMATION 
III/IV (CP)

Grade 9-12 Year-long course

PREREQUISITE-A in Computer Animation I/II and Teacher Recommendation

UC/CSU-Subject f or g

This class builds on concepts and skills introduced in Computer Animation.  Students work with more complex software to develop sophisticated animation projects and advance to more independent projects. This class is for advanced students who wish to pursue their interest in computer animation.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS (I/II) (CP)

Students create two-dimensional images using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.  There will be an emphasis on design elements, art principles, and color theory.  This course is organized as a bridge between the fine arts and the computer arts. 

COMPUTER ANIMATION I/II (CP)

This class introduces students to the world of computer 2D & 3D animation. Students learn the basic skills required to work with the movement of figures, landscapes, objects, lighting and textures used to create animation.

CONCERT BAND (CP)

Concert Band is open to any student with previous experience on a wind instrument, brass or percussion.  Concert Band students are involved in a minimum of 2-4 performances during the school year, which may include solo and ensemble competition, Honor Band, and at least one adjudicated festival or event. Students acquire theoretical knowledge of beginning to advanced musical concepts and understand European/Western classical music from a historical perspective.  Students interested in learning an instrument for the first time MUST consult the director BEFORE enrollment. 

CONCERT CHOIR (CP)

This course is an introduction to part singing and developing good singing techniques. A one-on-one concentration of theory fundamentals, ear training and musicianship will be introduced. Open to all grade levels of males and females. While this class is open to all students it is mainly for those students who are underclassmen and who have limited choral/music experience. No audition is required. Students in this class will be involved in a considerable amount of performances, many performances of which will be shared with the Chamber Choir. Students will be exposed to easy to medium choral repertoire difficulty.  Students who audition for Chamber Choir MUST have previously been enrolled in Concert Choir at least 1-2 years. or otherwise at the director’s discretion.

DANCE II (ADVANCED) (CP)

Advanced Dance is an advanced class for the student who has successfully completed Dance I. In this class students will continue learning and refining ballet, jazz, tap, modern and Pilate’s technique. Through the introduction of these techniques, the students will begin to have a working vocabulary of movement that will help them progress into improvisational work as well as choreography. Students will also have a chance to perform throughout the year participating in the school s fall and spring performances. Students will have the opportunity to see live performances and respond through critically through written form. Injury prevention, health, and diet for the dancer will also be covered. Dance in historical context and cultural diversity will be taught.

DRAWING AND PAINTING
(I/II) (CP)

This class begins with a focus on the Art Elements and Principles of Design. Each lesson is compliant with the California Visual Arts Standards and will include the production of art as well as the history and critical components of viewing art. Students will explore a variety of media such as pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and acrylic painting.

ADVANCED DRAWING & PAINTING
(III/IV) (CP)

This second year Drawing and Painting class is for students who have previously taken an art class. Focus continues to be on art elements and principles of design, with a more challenging concentration on drawing technique and color theory. Students are encouraged to take this class before they enroll in AP Studio Art.

 

JAZZ BAND (CP)

Grade 9-12 Year-long course

PREREQUISITE-Audition

Students perform at a very high level in Jazz Band.  They learn improvisational techniques and performance practice within the style.  Jazz band members participate in a minimum of two performances during the school year and at least one adjudicated festival.  Students acquire theoretical knowledge of basic musical concepts and understand Jazz music from a historical and cultural perspective.  Students must play one of the following instruments:  Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Drum set, Electric and/or Acoustic Bass, Piano and Guitar.
