Oak Park Graduation Requirements

The following are the minimum course requirements that must be satisfied in order to graduate from Oak Park High School. Our local board of education has established a total of 240 credits as the requirement for graduation from the Oak Park Unified School District. Please note that courses can only be used once to meet requirements. For example, a single computer class cannot meet both the practical skills requirement and the computer literacy requirement.

ENGLISH - Four years (40 credits) including English I, II, III and IV.

HEALTH - One semester (5 credits) of Health in the 9th grade.

HISTORY/ SOCIAL SCIENCE - Three and one half years (35 credits) including:
World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Government and Economics.

LIFE SKILLS - One semester (5 credits) of Life Skills in the 12th grade.

MATH - Three years (30 credits) including: Algebra and Geometry.

SCIENCE - Three years (30 credits) of science including biological and physical sciences.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Two years (20 credits) of P.E. must include 10 credits of PE 1 (9th grade PE). All or part of 10th grade PE may be earned through PE 10, Dance, or through a student’s successful participation in a CIF sponsored athletic team for OPHS in grades 10, 11 or 12. Students are required to continue to take PE until they have passed the California Physical Fitness Test (CPFT). Please refer to our "P.E. Requirement" page for more information on how athletics can be used for PE credit.

PRACTICAL SKILLS - One semester (5 credits): All courses in the “Practical Skills” and “Computer Education” sections may be used to meet this requirement, in addition to the following English electives: Journalism, Yearbook and Speech; as well as the following Math electives: Accounting 1A, 1B and Financial Math.

TECHNOLOGY - One semester (5 credits). This requirement can be fulfilled by any of the following classes: Office Applications, Web Design, Small Business/e-Commerce, Computer Programming, AP Computer Science, Computer Animation, Computer Graphics.

VISUAL/PERFORMING ARTS - One year (10 credits): The high school requirement may be met through any combination of 10 credit courses listed in our Visual and Performing Arts Department. For students attending colleges in the UC/CSU system, the requirement is a year-long class in a single emphasis area (e.g., visual arts, instrumental music, drama, choral music).

GENERAL ELECTIVES - (55 credits): In addition to the requirements above, students must complete 55 credits of electives to meet the graduation credit total. Any courses not used to meet prescribed graduation requirements may be used to meet the general elective requirement, including additional academic courses.

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE) – Beginning with the class of 2006 all students are required to pass a math and language arts test developed by the State of California in order to receive a high school diploma. These tests will be administered each year to all sophomore students and to any junior or senior student that has failed to pass the tests in a previous year. Students will have five opportunities during their high school career to pass the CAHSEE.

Note: Students are required to pass all graduation requirements. If a graduation requirement is not completed, students must repeat the class until a passing grade is achieved. Courses may be repeated for a higher grade; however, unit credit will be given only once.
